Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a bilateral meeting after five years in Kazan, Russia on Wednesday, separate from the BRICS Summit.
It is said that the two leaders talked for 50 minutes. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were also present with PM Modi in this meeting.
Posting the pictures of the meeting with Xi Jinping on X, PM Modi said, “Met President Xi Jinping separate from the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. Apart from the people of both countries, India-China relations are important for regional and global peace and stability. Mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity will show the way to bilateral relations between the two countries.”
After the meeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping and PM Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs of India has issued a statement.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, in this meeting, both the leaders welcomed the withdrawal of troops from the LAC and the agreement to resolve the dispute that started in 2020.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized on properly resolving the disputes and differences between the two countries. Along with this, PM Modi said that peace should not be allowed to be disturbed under any circumstances.
An agreement has been reached between the two countries regarding special representatives on questions related to the border between India and China. These special representatives will meet soon to restore peace on the border and try to find a mutually acceptable solution.
Dialogue will also be taken forward at the level of the Foreign Minister to bring the bilateral relations of the two countries back on track.
What did China say after the meeting?
During this conversation, both leaders emphasized stable and friendly bilateral relations. Along with this, both countries talked about the positive impact of global peace and prosperity in their region.
Both leaders advocated multilateral Asia and a multilateral world. Both leaders have agreed to improve bilateral relations on every front and solve the challenges related to development.
China has also stated the meeting of Xi Jinping and PM Modi.
China’s Foreign Ministry said in its statement, “Apart from increasing contact and cooperation between each other, both the countries emphasized resolving disagreements and differences with understanding. Both leaders also advocated to cooperate in the matter of progress. Both the countries also talked about walking shoulder to shoulder in international responsibilities.”
Before the meeting of the two leaders, India had announced on Monday that an agreement had been reached with China regarding patrolling of troops on the Line of Actual Control.
On Tuesday, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that there will be a bilateral meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
PM Modi reached Russia on Tuesday to attend the 16th summit of BRICS. On the first day, PM Modi had a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. In a meeting with President Putin, PM Modi said that India is committed to every possible help to end the Ukraine-Russia crisis.
The background of the meeting was already prepared
Earlier, the two leaders met in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu in October 2019. In 2019 itself, tensions started increasing on the India-China border in eastern Ladakh, and by 2020, there was a violent clash between the soldiers of the two countries in Galwan, in which 20 soldiers of India and many soldiers of China were killed.
Talks were going on for a long time between the two countries at the military and diplomatic level to reduce tension on the border. Both countries were trying to reduce tension and normalize relations.
On July 4 this year, a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was held in Kazakhstan and in this meeting, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
After this, on July 25, in an ASEAN-related meeting in Laos, Wang Yi and Jaishankar discussed the border dispute. Then India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Wang Yi in St. Petersburg, Russia, in a BRICS-related meeting.
That is, the background for the meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping was already being prepared. It is said that Russia also wants the tension between the two countries to end and Russia also has a role in PM Modi’s meeting with Xi Jinping.
