The career of the talented right-handed batsman Prithvi Shaw, who was once considered the successor of Sachin Tendulkar, has got stuck in a whirlpool.
24-year-old Prithvi has been dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team due to overweight and alleged indiscipline.
Now he will not be able to play in the match against Tripura in Agartala from October 26.
Prithvi Shaw has responded on social media Instagram – “Need a break thx!” That is, he needs a break.
Promising but questions on discipline
Prithvi Shaw, an excellent stroke player, had a great start to his career. Century in the very first Ranji match. Century in the very first Duleep Trophy match and the icing on the cake – century in the first Test.
Despite such a record, a very talented batsman could never become a regular member of the team.
Six years later, his stats read – 5 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20 International. A very talented player is on the sidelines.
Prithvi Shaw has been in the news more for the wrong reasons than for his talent.
Although the Mumbai team management did not reveal the exact reason behind his ouster from the team, it is believed that his coach is not happy with his attitude towards fitness and discipline.
The selection committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) includes Sanjay Patil (President), Ravi Thakkar, Jitendra Thackeray, Kiran Powar and Vikrant Yeligeti.
It is reported that they have decided to exclude Shaw for at least one Ranji Trophy season.
The decision to exclude Shaw was not just the decision of the management and selectors. Even the captain and coach wanted him out of the team.
According to sources, Shaw’s indiscipline has become a big headache for the Maharashtra Cricket Association.
Gone to Mumbai
Reporting late to the net session is one of the biggest concerns for the team management. It is also being claimed in the news that he does not take the net sessions seriously and is also irregular.
Shaw has been missing from many practice sessions even after getting out cheaply. Many people also consider him to be overweight, which also shows his lack of discipline towards his profession.
In the two Ranji matches that Shaw has played so far this season, he has scored 7 and 12 against Baroda, 1 and 39 not out against Maharashtra.
Prithvi Shaw’s family moved to Mumbai from Gaya in Bihar about two and a half decades ago. Short-statured Prithvi Shaw had made a big name for himself from school cricket itself.
In the year 2013, in the Harris Shield School Tournament, Prithvi created a world record by scoring 546 runs at the age of 14.
In the year 2017, 17-year-old Prithvi stepped into the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai. He scored a century in the second innings of the match and was the Man of the Match.
Shaw equaled Sachin Tendulkar by scoring a century in his first match of the Duleep Trophy.
Sachin also scored a century in his first match of the Ranji and Duleep Trophy. Earlier, under his captaincy, he made the Under-19 Indian team world champion in the year 2018.
Sachin Tendulkar in the club
He got the Test cap against West Indies in Rajkot in 2018. He was 18 years old then. He became the youngest Test cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar.
Also, he scored a century on his first Test. The ICC i.e. International Cricket Council included Prithvi Shaw among the five emerging players in the same year.
Records, wealth, and fame seemed to be chasing Prithvi Shaw.
After scoring 237 runs in two Test matches of his first Test series against West Indies, Shaw next played for India in February 2020.
In 2018-19, he suffered an ankle injury during practice before the first match of the Border-Gavaskar series and had to be ruled out of the series.
In just one year, Prithvi Shaw fell from the pinnacle of fame to the alley of infamy. In 2019, the BCCI banned him for eight months on charges of doping and indiscipline.
A banned substance was found in his sample during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Prithvi later said that the banned substance entered his body due to cough syrup.
Instead of learning from this incident and recovering, Prithvi Shaw kept making mistakes year after year.
The performance of Indian batsmen on the tour of New Zealand in 2020 was disappointing.
However, Prithvi scored 98 runs in two matches, including a half-century. Prithvi also failed in the IPL that year.
Out of the team, controversy continues
He also disappointed on the 2020-21 Australia tour. His score in the first Test played in Adelaide was zero and four runs.
Questions were also raised on his technique and he was dropped. After that, it has been almost four years, he has not played a Test.
He played his last ODI and the only T20 three years ago in 2021.
In May 2021, Prithvi Shaw reached Goa for a holiday. Goa Police caught him for violating the rules of lockdown and questioned him.
He was not aware that he could not go there without an e-pass.
Prithvi Shaw failed the Yo-Yo test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.
Before the IPL, whether they are injured or not, all centrally contracted players have to pass the Yo-Yo test.
However, Prithvi was not among the contracted players of BCCI. He was included in the Delhi Capitals team. Still, he took the Yo-Yo test and failed.
The media raised the issue of his fitness loudly.
Once, there was a lot of controversy over one of his posts on Instagram.
A post came on Prithvi’s Instagram story in which Prithvi and model Nidhi Tapadia are air-kissing each other.
The accompanying message was – Happy Valentine’s Day Wifey! Later Prithvi Shaw clarified that his account was hacked.
Earlier last year, Prithvi had a fight with a social media influencer Sapna Gill in a pub in Andheri.
It is alleged that Gill was adamant about taking a selfie with him. The situation had reached a fight.
Prithvi did not want to let her take a selfie in the pub. Later, he had to leave the pub and run away. His car was chased and he was also attacked with a baseball bat.
Sapna Gill accused Prithvi Shaw of molestation. However, later the court acquitted him of all the charges.
