Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed deep grief over the accident that took place in the NICU of Jhansi Medical College. As soon as the information about the incident was received late on Friday night, the Chief Minister sent Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak and Principal Secretary Health to the spot overnight.
On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Rs 5 lakh each is being provided to the parents of the newborn babies who died untimely in the incident and Rs 50,000 each to the families of the injured from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The Chief Minister has directed the Divisional Commissioner and DIG of Jhansi to submit a report regarding the incident within 12 hours.
Ten children had died
10 newborn babies died due to burns and suffocation after a massive fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College. Divisional Commissioner Bimal Kumar Dubey said that 55 newborns were admitted in the ward where the fire broke out. 45 newborns were evacuated safely. They are undergoing treatment. As soon as the information about the accident was received, about 15 fire engines reached the spot. The army was also called. The army and the fire brigade together extinguished the fire. The children are being given the best medical treatment, they will recover soon. Deputy CM Brijesh Pathak has reached the medical college this morning.
16 injured children are undergoing treatment
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jhansi Sudha Singh said that 16 other children injured in the incident are undergoing treatment. At the time of the incident, more than 50 children were admitted in the NICU. In a brief statement on social media, Jhansi police said that a fire brigade was rushed to the spot while senior officials of the district also reached the medical college.
A couple hailing from the neighbouring Mahoba district was shocked by the death of their newborn child. The mother told reporters that the child was born on November 13 at 8 am. The grieving mother said my child has lost his life in the fire. Purported visuals from the medical college showed panicked patients and their attendants rushing out while several policemen assisted in rescue and relief measures. According to a statement issued from Lucknow, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the incident and directed the district administration officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured.
