According to an ANI report, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has successfully brought back the 26/11 mastermind, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, to India. The 2008 Mumbai attacks killed 166 people and injured over 238. This extradition is the result of long-standing efforts to ensure justice in these attacks.
Rana was brought to Delhi’s Palam Airport on a special plane. He was in judicial custody in the US and has been brought to India following the legal process under the India-US Extradition Treaty.
On May 16, 2023, the Central District Court of California approved his extradition, but Rana filed legal petitions in several courts, including the US Supreme Court, which were rejected.
India’s NIA, the US Department of Justice, Indian intelligence agencies, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Ministry of Home Affairs also played a big role in this extradition. Tahawwur Rana carried out the 26/11 attack along with David Coleman Headley and terrorist organizations Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihadi-Islami. The Government of India has declared these organizations as terrorist organizations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967.
