According to the constitution of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), at least 50 percent of the state unit presidents must have already been elected for the election of the national president. For this reason, the electoral process is being expedited at the state level.
New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will get a new national president by mid-March.
“Our process is fixed. As per the information available in the public domain, the party will get a new president by mid-March,” he said.
The election of the national president will be held after the state units of the party complete the election of their respective presidents.
This process was to be completed in January, but the selection of the new president was postponed due to the pending Delhi Assembly elections and elections in several state units.
According to the BJP constitution, the election of the national president cannot take place unless at least 50 percent of the state unit presidents have already been elected. For this reason, the election process is being accelerated at the state level.
Along with state presidents, members of the electoral college for the national president are also elected. At present, elections have been completed in only 12 of the 36 states, meaning elections are required to be held in at least six more states.
JP Nadda was first appointed as the acting national president of BJP on 17 June 2019 and remained in the role till 20 January 2020. Subsequently, on 20 January 2020, he was elected the 11th national president of the party and has been holding the position since then.
Under the leadership of Nadda, BJP contested elections in 35 states and won 16 states. Similarly, the party also performed brilliantly in the Lok Sabha elections and returned to power.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda, while targeting the Himachal Pradesh government, said “The Congress party has no principles. It has become only a party of brothers, sisters, and mothers.”
Addressing a public meeting held in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, the Union Minister asked the Congress party whether it could live up to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and Subhash Chandra Bose.
