Pratap Sarnaik likely to be appointed MSRTC chairman signals BJP-Shiv Sena truce

The decision comes just a month after the government appointed IAS officer Sanjay Sethi as MSRTC chief. Traditionally, the post is reserved for a political representative from the transportation department, which is held by the Shiv Sena.

Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reported to appoint Transport Minister and Shiv Sena leader Pratap Sarnaik as the new chairman of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). While the official order is yet to be released, the move signals a thaw in relations between Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the leader of the Shiv Sena.

The decision comes just a month after the government appointed IAS officer Sanjay Sethi as MSRTC chief. Traditionally, the post is reserved for a political representative from the transportation department, which is held by the Shiv Sena. The post became vacant after Bharat Gogawale resigned following his induction into the state cabinet. Sethi’s appointment was seen as a political snub to Shinde by Fadnavis, leading to tensions within the ruling coalition.

Speaking on the matter, Sarnaik said that he was unaware of the development until it was reported in the media, according to a Times of India report. “The post is usually held by a political representative. If I am given the opportunity, I will do my best to serve in the role,” he said.

The appointment, once finalized, is expected to strengthen ties between the BJP and Shiv Sena factions within the Mahayuti coalition.

MSRTC Facing Daily Losses Of ₹3 Crore

Meanwhile, The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is facing daily losses of Rs 3 crore due to fare concessions provided to women and senior citizens, Transportation Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced recently. Moving ahead, the state government has decided not to offer any further travel concessions on ST buses.

Speaking at an event in Dharashiv on February 21, Sarnaik highlighted the financial strain caused by the 50 percent fare discount for women and the 75 percent concession for senior citizens. He said, “These concessions have significantly impacted MSRTC’s financial health. If we continue with such grants, running the corporation will become extremely difficult. Therefore, we cannot consider further concessions.”
