Bibek Debroy dies: Chairman of Prime Minister Modi’s Economic Advisory Council breathed his last at the age of 69

Bibek Debroy, eminent economist and chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council, died in Delhi. 69-year-old Debroy died of intestinal obstruction at 7 am on Friday at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi expressed deep condolences on the demise of Debroy on his official X account. In his post, he wrote, “Dr. Bibek Debroy ji was a brilliant scholar who deeply understood economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality, and many other fields. His works left an indelible mark on the intellectual world of India. Apart from his contribution to public policies, he had a special interest in working on our ancient texts, which he made accessible to the younger generation.”

Bibek Debroy was born in West Bengal. He completed his early education at Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur, and later studied at Presidency College, Kolkata, and Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

According to the government of India, the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) is an independent body that advises the prime minister on economic and related issues. Other eminent economists currently in the council include Dr. Shamika Ravi and Sanjeev Sanyal as members, while Rakesh Mohan, Dr. Sajjid Chinoy, Dr. Neelkanth Mishra, Nilesh Shah, Prof. T.T. Ram Mohan, and Dr. Poonam Gupta are serving as part-time members.
